1. The Count’s House
The Count’s House, a historic home with Greek architecture, is one of the oldest landmarks in McHenry County, IL. The home is very well preserved also. There are no official records to show when this home was built. But it is believed to have been constructed much before the Civil War. It is also said that there were many owners to the house, the most prominent among them being Count Oskar Bopp von Oberstadt, a count from Austria. The house has been named only after him. Thanks to the Greek architectural design of the house, it has been included in the National Register of Historic Places.
2.The Christian Geister House
The Christian Geister House, a residence of historic importance, is located in Algonquin, Illinois. In 1892, Amos Wilburn, a local carpenter, began building this house with Victorian style architecture. Christian Geister bought the place even when it was under construction. He lived in the house till 1909 and sold it to a Mrs. Emma Haeger Estergren. She lived there till 1970s. Estergren was actively involved in the Women’s Suffrage movement. She actively involved herself in the animal rights movement as well. Thanks to the grand Victorian style architecture of the house, it has been included in the National Register of Historic Places.
3. The Charles H. Hibbard House
The Charles H. Hibbard House, that has also been included in the National Register of Historic Places, is also known as the Cupola House. Since it is one of the threatened landmarks, the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois has included it in their list. About a decade ago, the home was renovated to a limited extent. The house is famous for its Italianate architecture. The house got the name “Cupola House” due to the cupola in an octagonal shape on the roof of the structure. Apart from ventilating the house very well, the cupola served the purpose of watching when the Civil War was on.
